32 RESEARCH ON NURSING PRACTICE Nursing Intervention s Nurse-Patient Interaction. Research on the effectiveness of nursing interventions for pain management constituted the majority of studies for this review. Diers, Schmidt, McBride, and Davis (1972) reviewed studies from the 1960s on the effectiveness on pain of varying levels of purposive interaction between nurses and patients. The cumulative evidence from these and later studies suggested that more interactive, attentive involvement by nurses in the management of patients' pain resulted in (a) reduced levels of patients' pain; (b) quicker pain relief; and (c) in some cases, reduced dependence upon medication as the sole treatment (Bochnak, 1982; McBride, 1966; Moss, 1967; Moss & Meyer, 1966).

Jacox (1979) and others described components of pain that were more psychosocial than physical in nature, and Diers et al. and others reported evidence of the relief of distress, discomfort, and anxiety by interactive nursing interventions. However, the lack of consistent definition and operationalization of interactive nursing approaches used in the research was a persistent problem (Chambers & Price, 1967). Diers et al. (1972) addressed this problem in their study by using a categorization scheme of nursing approaches based on psychosomatic pain theory.
