I suggested that the ethnicity of the Gypsy could be exoticized (+), or concealed (0), or degraded (-), or neutralized (+ -). I was not concerned with how many times and how many Gypsies adopted the different strategies. My analysis was intended to demonstrate the underlying principles, rather than any quantitative information.
Patterns and priorities impose themselves upon the ethnographer. Voices and ideas are neither muffled nor dismissed. To the professional positivist this seems like chaos. The voices and material lead the researcher in unpredictable, uncontrollable directions. This is indeed not a controlled experiment. The fieldworker cannot separate the act of gathering material from that of its continuing interpretation.
