A small thermal mass, holding the thermally susceptible element, is suspended from a thermally isolating membrane, with its temperature is raised well above the ambient temperature. Next, active heating and passive cooling are used to accurately control the temperature of the thermal mass. Although this technique gives very good results, the elevated temperatures accelerate ageing as well as increa se thermal noise. Active heat removal , in contrast to the above technique, allows the temperature of the reference to remain near the ambient temperature.

Two temperature sensing resistors (R2 and R3) are combined in a Wheat stone-bridge configuration. The bridge- signal is fed into a voltage comparator.
