Many people become more aware about how they communicate if there is a third party present. With this awareness it also becomes easier for them to communicate in a way that supports connection. Civil courage or disrespectful behavior? First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew.

This can help you to see when and how you can act in dealing with the conflict. One thing to watch out for is when someone makes evaluations, uses labels and/or makes an analysis about what has happened. We must actually separate these from that which has happened. Be also conscious about if someone involved in the conflict starts looking for who is right and who is wrong. When someone does this there is a great risk of taking sides. The conflict may get stuck and becomes more difficult to handle.

Summary The book begins with an overview of mediation (chapters 1-2). Concepts about human nature, and views about conflict and justice are discussed here. Chapters 3 and 4 contain reflections on passivity, revenge, forgiveness, shame and guilt. Thereafter follows two chapters about how Nonviolent Communication can be used in mediation (chapters 5 and 6). In order to mediate, most of us need to practice, therefore chapter 7 contains exercises that give you access to various tools that you can use during mediation.
